Inshore Fishing on the Halifax River

The Halifax River is a coastal river running north to south parallel to the coast, through the city of Daytona Beach and down to Ponce Inlet where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Only 25 miles long, the Halifax is one of Florida’s most beautiful, navigable rivers with miles of mangroves lining its banks as well as many elegant waterfront homes. The river is habitat for exotic waterbirds, dolphins and manatees.

The Halifax River is part of the ICW (Intracoastal Waterway) providing excellent boating conditions almost every day of the year. The Ponce Inlet lighthouse at its mouth is the tallest in Florida and often seen on our inshore fishing trips.

The Halifax River and its tributaries are the foundation for inshore and backcountry fishing in Daytona Beach. Inshore fishing trips with Captain Sean are along the Halifax River to as far as Ponce Inlet.

A Wide Variety of Fish

The waters of the Halifax River are brackish and home to a wide variety of saltwater and fresh water fish. The river’s basin is a maze of slow moving creeks and grassy marshes. These wetlands are perfect habitat for saltwater species that pass through Ponce Inlet to spawn.

Fish caught on inshore fishing trips on the Halifax River include Redfish, Spotted Sea Trout (Speckled Trout), Flounder, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Snook, Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and even Sharks. The two most common shark species caught while fishing on the Halifax River are Shovelhead Sharks and young Atlantic Sharpnosed Sharks.

You never know what you’re going to catch on an inshore fishing trip in Daytona Beach but you’ll always have fun with Captain Sean!
